Industrial Site Redevelopment, Sudbury, Suffolk

Client: Ralston Purina Ltd

Ralston Purina had inherited a mill, which had been in operation since the 18th century. With new processes and markets they faced the decision of whether to reinvest at this site or concentrate production at another site nearby.

Bone Wells Urbecon provided an appraisal of the implications of closure and relocation of the food processing plant at Great Cornard, Sudbury and the economic viability of alternative industrial uses, in context of potential redevelopment for housing.

Bone Wells Urbecon’s contribution involved: an assessment of market potential of existing land and building for business use, including appraisal of local supply and demand for industrial premises; a review of the manufacturers’ business situation and industrial outlook; preparation of a position statement on current operations, in terms of employment levels, manufacturing process and output; an analysis of site running costs and operational efficiency of the two plants; assessment of road access and environmental restrictions; a review of planning policy.
